The "Three Cities" consist of the historical places Birgu (Vittoriosa), Bormla (Cospicua) and L'Isla (Senglea) at the edge of the Grand Harbour. They were formerly the residential area of the load carriers, stevedores, and later the dockers.

The best entrance to Birgu is through the gate Couvre Porte. Following the Main Gate Street, you can reach the Inquisitor's Palace from there. It was the seat of the apostolic delegation and it is the only palast of inquisition that survived in Europe. Also worth visiting is the Marine Museum and the St. Lawrence Church with the St. Joseph Oratory.
In L'Isla just a few sights of the time of the knights remain. Most buildings were built after 1947 or converted. Sengleas main attraction is the famous Vedetta with symbols of eyes and ears on the walls. They symbolise the vigilance of the knights in the service of Christianity. The Triq il-Vittorio leads to the parish church Our Lady of Victory.
The largest of the „Three Cities“ is Cospicua, with over 6,000 inhabitants. The baroque Church of the Immaculate Conception is placed between the quay and the old city part. It survived the war almost unscathed and is embellished with numerous paintings of the 18th Century.
