The Great siege of Malta

The Great Siege of Malta referred to the siege of the fortresses and towns of the Hospitaller by the Turks in 1565. The city of Valletta don’t exist at this time, the Knights lived in Birgu, the present Vittoriosa. On 18 May 1565 the Turkish fleet appeared before Malta's coast. On 24 May they opened fire on the Fort St. Elmo at the entrance to the Grand Harbour. About 30 days the crew being fought until none of them survived the attack. After taking the fort the Turkish commander-in-chief, Mustafa Pasha, had nailed the dead bodies of  the Christians on crosses and and left them drive with the flow in the Grand Harbour. In their view, the Grand Master of the Order, La Valette, give the command to behead all Turkish prisoners and send their heads as cannon balls to the enemies. is situated Valletta today, and shelled from there Birgu and the Fort St. Angelo, Senglea and other bases of the Order with up to 200 kg stone balls. Almost three months lasted the fight, in which the knights and their auxiliary forces were clear numerically inferior. As the Knights their struggle gave almost lost, the Turks reached on 7 September the news of the landing of a Sicilian relief corps in the bay of Mellieha in the north of the island. They overrated their strength and also been the autumn storms, they decided to withdraw - Malta was saved.
