From Paola you easily find yourself in Tarxien which is directly connected. Behind the church in Paola you can turn to the left to the temples of Tarxien. It is the largest temple complex of the Maltese megalithic culture. The three well-preserved buildings date from the period around 3000 BC.
The temples were oracle places of an Earthgod, the Magna Mater. The "Great Mother", which was worshiped in many previous religions, symbolizes the cycle: birth, growth and death.
