Things to know before booking a Malta Blue Lagoon boat tour

  • Your classic Blue Lagoon tour covers everything from comfortable logistics to a generous swim stop at one of the most beautiful lagoons in the world, with onboard entertainment for a well-rounded day of fun. But you still need to do a free registration. To manage crowds, Malta introduced a free “Book, Protect, Enjoy” system from May 1, 2025. Blue Lagoon access is capped at 4,000 per slot, and every visitor is required to register online for free based on cruise timings.
  • The Blue Lagoon is one of Malta’s most sought-after summer experiences. The 11am–2pm slot is the most in demand, especially from June to August. Tours open up weeks in advance, so if you’re travelling in summer, we recommend booking at least 5–7 days ahead.
Want fewer crowds and Malta’s dreamiest sunset? Go for our sunset cruise — golden-hour views, fewer people, and live music make it a bestseller.
  • If you're sailing between June and October, some experiences include a swim stop at Crystal Lagoon — a nearby cove that’s only accessible by boat. It’s ringed by dramatic 40-metre cliffs, with clearer, deeper waters perfect for snorkelling and cliff-jumping. Most cruises pass by for photos, but select ones stop for 30–60 minutes. It’s a weather-permitting stop — but if plans change, your captain will swap it with an equally gorgeous location. Malta’s full of them.
  • Blue Lagoon cruises are more than just swim-and-sun time. You’ll cruise past (and sometimes into!) a mix of sea caves, bays, and landmarks. Depending on your route, you might spot — Aħrax Cave (a glittering sea cave), Elephant’s Head Rock (nature’s own sculpture), St. Paul’s Islands & statue (with stories of shipwrecked saints), Santa Maria & Crystal Lagoons (natural cliff-framed swimming pools), and Mgarr Harbour (Gozo’s postcard-perfect port).
  • If you're hoping to see more of Malta in one go, pick an experience that includes Gozo (another one of its three islands) —the ancient sister island. Our Gozo & Comino Full-Day Cruise (from Sliema or St. Paul’s Bay) lets you swim at Blue Lagoon (1.5-hour stop) and complete it with a short sightseeing bus tour in Gozo, stopping in Victoria (the Citadel) and sometimes Xlendi Bay. You’ll get culture, beaches, and incredible views—all in one seamless day.
  • We offer cruises from Sliema, St. Paul’s Bay, and Mellieħa (Marfa Bay)—each with its perks. Mellieħa is closest to Comino, so you get more swim time. St. Paul’s Bay offers a good mix of scenic cruising and Blue Lagoon time. Sliema is furthest but often includes a Gozo detour, perfect for sightseeing lovers. Travel time to Comino ranges from 30 mins to 1.5 hours.

Check-in & boarding guide

✅ How early should I arrive?

Plan to arrive at least 20–30 minutes before your cruise departs. Boarding usually closes 15–20 minutes prior to departure, and boats cannot wait for late arrivals. If you’re eyeing a good spot on the sun deck, arriving early also helps — upper deck chairs are first-come, first-served.

🎫 What tickets or documents do I need?

You’ll need to show your ticket or booking confirmation (digital is fine) during check-in.
Important: If your cruise stops at the Blue Lagoon, you must register for a free access pass with a QR code at blcomino.com. This is required by Maltese authorities starting May 2025. Match your slot to your boat’s Blue Lagoon stop time — most day tours require both morning and afternoon slots.

👗 What’s the dress code?

For daytime cruises, casual, comfortable clothing is ideal — think swimwear, cover-ups, and quick-dry footwear. Don’t forget your towel, sunscreen, and sunglasses. If you’re cruising in the off-season, bring a jacket — it can get breezy on the water.
For evening/sunset cruises with dinner or live music, opt for smart casual — no need to go formal, just no beachwear or wet swimsuits at dinner.

🛃 Security & boarding procedures

There’s no formal security screening, but crew may check bags briefly on boarding. Group seating is open, so arrive early for your choice of spot — top deck for sunbathing, shaded mid-deck for views, or air-conditioned lower deck for comfort.
You’ll board directly from the quay — look for the boat name mentioned in your confirmation (e.g., Lady Shelley, Kataleya, or a large blue-and-white vessel).

👶 Are children & pets allowed?

Children are absolutely welcome! Some boats have slides and shallow ladders for easy water access — just ensure kids are supervised at all times.
Pets, however, are not allowed onboard. Neither are large suitcases or bulky luggage.

🧳 Can I bring bags/luggage on board?

Small day bags and backpacks are fine, but large suitcases and oversized luggage aren’t permitted. Limited locker storage is available onboard on a first-come, first-served basis. Bring essentials only — space is shared, and decks can get crowded.

Frequently asked questions about Malta Blue Lagoon tours

How long are the cruises?

Most cruises run for 6 to 7.5 hours, including sightseeing and swimming stops. Sunset cruises are slightly shorter (around 5-6 hours) and timed for golden hour views.

Can I book last-minute?

Yes—but it’s risky in peak season (June–August). Popular slots (especially 11am–2pm) fill up fast. Book at least 5–7 days ahead if you're visiting in summer.

What’s the best cruise for couples?

The Blue Lagoon Sunset Cruise is perfect for couples—fewer crowds, golden-hour swimming, live music, and scenic views that feel made for two.

Are meals included?

Not typically. Most cruises have an onboard café serving snacks and drinks for purchase. You’re welcome to bring your own light food and non-alcoholic drinks.

What’s the difference between day and evening cruises?

Day cruises often include Gozo or Crystal Lagoon stops and longer swim times. Evening cruises are shorter, crowd-free, and timed for sunset views and relaxed vibes.

Are cruises accessible for wheelchair users?

Most boats are wheelchair and stroller accessible. However, Comino Island is not—its terrain is rugged and uneven. Boarding ramps and onboard facilities vary by operator.

Are there restrooms onboard?

Yes, all boats offer onboard restroom facilities, including separate male/female toilets and changing areas.

Do I need to register separately to enter Blue Lagoon?

Yes. As of May 2025, Malta requires all visitors to register for a free access pass at blcomino.com. Choose a slot that matches your cruise schedule.

Are children allowed?

Yes! Most cruises are family-friendly and offer slides and shallow swim areas. Santa Maria Bay and the main deck are best for little ones.

Will we definitely stop at the Crystal Lagoon?

Crystal Lagoon stops are weather-dependent and usually included between June and October. If conditions aren’t safe, the captain may substitute another scenic stop.
